My friends must wonder why I take so long to answer their calls. Here’s why: When my phone rings, I get to hear my favorite Depeche Mode song as my ringtone.
It's easy to customize the ringtone on your Palm webOS phone to play the first 30 seconds of any song on your phone. First, if you haven't already done so, add music to your phone. You can do this by using USB Drive mode or the Palm Music Assistant.
Now you're ready for the fun part:
- Open Sounds & Ringtones.
- Tap the displayed ringtone to open the full list of tones.
- Tap the Add Song icon in the lower left part of the screen.
- Tap the Preview icon to the right of a song title to preview it.
- Tap the song title to add it as your ringtone.
- Use the back gesture to get to the Ringtone Volume slider, and then tap, hold, and drag the slider to change volume.

Feature request: The first 30 seconds of my music files are lame, but the innards are freaking awesome. How about the ability to crop the ringtones down to the good parts? Remember minitones.prc?
Please and thanks!

Great!! How do you change the sound for SMS? Oh.
Posted by: WebOS Fan | January 29, 2010 at 11:19 AM
that's great. Palm should consider doing some advertising with Verizon. How come I see Snuggies every five minutes but nothing about Palm coming to Verizon? If the mesothelioma attys advertise, maybe Palm should, too.
Just a thought.

I agree! We need the ability to customize the sms ringtone!

when are we gettin 3d games on our pre in the uk this phone has been a complete waste of money so far the iphone is much better
Posted by: ryan scott | January 29, 2010 at 03:09 PM
yea seriously I mean who wants the first 30 seconds of a song, the best parts are usually near or at the end. I wish palm would do something to be able to let us pick what 30 seconds of a song we get to use.

Customised sound for SMS is possible, it's right there in the messaging settings. Go in there and you can specify a file from the ringtones folder to play, use any WAV or MP3 etc file you like. I've got 'wild eep' from old Macs!

or a Mini Composer / Mixer or Editor.. where we can mix different music and beats, compose songs, or whatever.. possibilities are endless!

Andrew, webOS Fan and others,
Here's how to change your New Message alert:
1. Open Messaging.
2. Swipe down from the top left to open the menu, choose Preferences & Accounts.
3. Tap "Sound" under New Message and choose Ringtone to open the full list of tones.
5. Tap the Add Song icon in the lower left part of the screen.
6. Tap the Preview icon to the right of a song title to preview it.
7. Tap the song title to add it as your New Message alert.
Hat tip to Alan for paraphrasing this above!

interesting...it takes me so long to answer calls because the Pixi is god-awful slow. I just bought a Pixi because I was excited about WebOS. I still am excited about WebOS - it's a lot of fun to use. However, were the novelty of the platform not what it is for me, I would despise this product. I'm used to an iPod Touch and the iPhone that my wife has, and this Pixi is nearly unusable when compared with the competish.
I'm sure this won't make it passed moderation, but please echo this up the chain. Make WebOS run better on the Pixi. I've never used a Pre, but I hope it's far-better than this.

Hi Joey,
Thanks for the feedback, we hear you. One of the great things about webOS is over-the-air updates, delivered right to your phone without the need to connect it to your computer.
The next update will be webOS 1.4, and it'll be released to our carrier partners later this month. In addition to performance improvements, webOS 1.4 adds video recording and other enhancements to your Palm Pixi. Stay tuned!

I was interested in knowing when the Z22 HotSync for USB connections will be updated for 2007 Outlook using Windows 7 (64-bit). Soon I hope.

You get 10 bonus points for mentioning that you listen to Depeche Mode. That's a winner in my book! :)

Hi internet Shy,
Palm has no plans to offer any future products based on Palm OS, or to release additional compatibility updates for HotSync. Unfortunately, that means a 64-bit Windows 7 installation will remain unsupported.
If you decide to migrate from an older, working installation, Palm provides a number of helpful tools to bring your data to our current webOS platform. More info is available here:

Hope it helps,

I changed the alert tone for my SMS but when I get a new SMS, all it does is vibrate, it does not play my new tone. The switch is on ring because my calls ring but not my SMS. HELP!

Kylie, does it work if you choose another alert tone? There could be an issue with that particular audio file. Try switching to another to find out.

When trying to view certain websites i.e. school or government websites, i get Error loading page. [2035]. I tried the same pages on the iPhone or the droid and they came up just fine. HELP?

I love my Palm Pre but would love it even more if there was an app like Shazam on the iphone. You know how sometimes you hear a song you like but don't know the name or artist...it would be great if the Pre could tell me.

I love my Pre, but the internal antenna on the pre is not sufficient for the area I'm in. I loose signal strength frequently at different times of the day. Is there an improved antenna in the Pixi. Is there a Palm phone on the horizon with a 3+ inch touch screen, the faster processor of the Pre, and the keys on the face of the phone like the Pixi?

i cropped my own music files into ringtone friendly snippets. they are compatible, and they transfer to my pixi files, but when i use my device and attempt to change a ringtone or set a ringtone for a specific person, my pixi does not show the tones in the device. i disconnected and reconnected the pixi, opened the folders to view content and was able to find them on the computer- but again, not on the device.
any ideas?

@Jared Burke: try http://www.myxer.com/
They let you crop the music file into a 40 sec ringtone then send to phone or save to computer.
