After a successful early access program, Palm’s Mojo Software Development Kit is available to all interested app developers.
The SDK can be downloaded from a new developer portal -- Palm webOSdev -- at developer.palm.com. Any interested developer with a valid email address can access the SDK, its associated documentation, and new Mojo developer forums.
The initial response to Palm webOS apps -- from both developers and customers -- has been enthusiastic. Even in its initial beta stage, over 1.8 million apps have been downloaded from the beta App Catalog since Palm Pre was released less than six weeks ago. Thousands of developers have participated in the Mojo SDK early access program since it began in early April. New applications are in the pipeline for the Palm App Catalog, and the App Catalog submission process will be opened to all developers beginning this fall.
Developers interested in exploring Palm webOS and the Mojo SDK further may be interested in these upcoming events:
- Michael Abbott, Palm’s Senior Vice President for Application Software & Services, is speaking today on the emerging opportunities for mobile applications at the
MobileBeat 2009 conference in San Francisco.
-
webOShelp is organizing a developer meetup (at Palm’s Sunnyvale headquarters) on July 28.
-
preDevCamp an informal network of Mojo developers, will host events in 73 cities around the world on August 8.
Additional opportunities to find out more about developing for Palm webOS can be found on the
webOSdev portal.

When will we be provided a method to create and install applications outside of the "App Catalog"? This functionality exists for almost all other smartphones.

Unfortunately one can't create an account, the "verification link" is bogus.
And one can't recover the account's password...I'm in limbo! Help!

The link that is sent out after registering for the download does not appear.
It shows up as the following:

While we're really happy about the shout out (to webOShelp) we unfortunately can't take credit for the meetup at Palm headquarters. We'll be attending, for sure, but we didn't organize it.

Hi!
I was attempting to download the SDK, however when I get the email it says:
"To do so, click the following link, or copy and paste the URL below into the address field in your browser:
#INTERPRET:EVENTVAR:TOKENTEXT#"
and as I'm sure you're aware, that isn't a valid URL.
I've tried twice. Do you suggest trying more or is there an alternative to this method?

Good news! Congratulations!
What about getting unlocked phones for development? We all already have iPhones for development, so it'll be hard to justify buying into a 2-year Sprint contract just to get our hands on a phone for for testing our apps. Google sells unlocked Android phones for development which is a great idea. Anything like that planned?
Thanks,
Christian

Wow, when they mean all that includes Linux. Kudos to palm.

Could you explain why the link in the download e-mail is a broken text "#INTERPRET:EVENTVAR:TOKENTEXT#"?
Thanks.

Awesome, this is great news! I run a site that reviews WebOS Apps ( http://www.webosappreview.com ), and can't wait until there are more available to review!

Can't wait to reap the benefits of all you hard working app developers.
Flickr app plz, kthxbai.

@Christian: The kit includes an emulator.
Posted by: Stupidscript | July 16, 2009 at 03:42 PM
I don't think I can sign this license agreement. If I submit an application to you, you can use it for anything you want, including providing it to 3rd parties?!?
I see you didn't take any of the suggestions given to you on application distribution seriously. This is a real snub to past Palm developers. This was your chance to be different than Apple rather than to copy them.

Thanks to those of you who alerted us to the link issue during registration. Should be fixed now.

Need to get it ASAP. Cannot wait to look into PRE development
Posted by: iPhone Game | July 16, 2009 at 07:41 PM
@Stupidscript: Yes, there's an emulator, but that's not really sufficient for complete testing. Eventually you have to test on a device before releasing.
Posted by: Christian Cantrell | July 16, 2009 at 10:42 PM
When should the Pre users expect to see the new apps in the store?
I'm excited and have been on the edge of my seat for weeks! Can't wait to see what you guys come up with for us!
