Today, several webOS developers are formally unveiling new apps and functionality for Palm Pre1. If you’re one of the first customers for Palm Pre, you’ve probably already discovered some of these in the beta version of the App Catalog -- over 150,000 apps were downloaded on the first day that Pre was available.
The webOS developers announcing apps and developer services today include:
-
uLocate: the WHERE application for Pre provides local content based on your current location, including weather, news, restaurant reviews, gas stations, movie show times, and the ability to connect with other users.
- Zumobi: the company’s Today Show and Sporting News Baseball apps for Pre offer on-the-go news and sports updates.
- LikeMe: This application combines your location with your LikeMe profile to offer personalized recommendations on nearby places.
- FlightView: The FlightView app provides users up-to-the-minute flight information.
- Mark/Space: The Mac version of "The Missing Sync for Palm Pre” Beta 1 synchronizes contacts, calendars, music, ringtones, photos and more between a Mac and Pre.
- Chapura: PocketMirror Standard lets Pre users synchronize data with non-EAS desktop versions of Microsoft Outlook.
- Citysearch: With Mobile by Citysearch, Pre users can browse, search and share local business information and post real-time reviews.
- Handmark: Express Stocks helps Palm Pre customers keep up with their stock portfolio and market news.
- Pandora: The popular internet radio application provides a personalized free mobile music channel to Pre customers.
- Fandango: Not only can Pre users view movie trailers and order tickets using this app, but Fandango will automatically schedule your upcoming movies on your calendar thanks to Palm Synergy.
- Beeweeb: beeweeb is offering development services for the Palm webOS platform and the new Palm Pre phone.
- Agile Commerce: Agile Commerce is working with developers to create applications for the Palm webOS platform and the Palm Pre phone.
Hundreds of independent developers are participating in Palm’s early access program for the Mojo SDK (the software development kit for creating webOS apps), with thousands more developers ready to dive in as we ramp up. And with MotionApps’s emulator called “Classic,” Pre already runs programs from the vast library of apps already developed for Palm OS.

Unlimited usage data plan strongly recommended; additional data charges may apply. Within wireless coverage area only. Number of applications and actual performance will vary depending on applications used and actions performed.
If you plug it into a Linux box via USB does it show up as a mass storage device? Can you copy over an mp3 and have it show up in the media player? How about copying songs off of the pre that were purchased via amazon via usb?

I would like something that will not force me to use Google as my "backup" - I simply refuse to back up all my contacts and personal information on a public domain like Google - no one can assure me 100% that Google will never be hacked and my information stolen - if someone hacks into my own computer and steals it, my fault, if someone steals it from Google, what does Google care? It wont hurt them or their business, but i run the risk of identity theft, and exposing all my contacts to identity theft

I love my pre literally I take it to bed each night and fall asleep with it in my hands..LOL seriously I love the phone I had the treo pro prior (first palm fone) and now the pre, I am impressed, Yes people are making "complaints" more like constructive criticism, and Mine would have to be:
WHY no video camera(will there be an update?) and HOw if at all do I zoom on the camera??

The post says that the Mark/Space "Missing Sync" app is available, but yet it's not in the App Catalog nor available on the Mark/Space site. Anyone know when it's going to be available??? As a former Palm Desktop user for the Mac, I'm both shocked and disheartened that the Pre does not support a desktop sync for the Mac. Synergy should merely be a BACKUP, not a day-to-day system. How am I supposed to actively update my contacts/calendar using Google? I want a desktop solution and I'm saddened that Palm has abandoned their former strength of PIM.

I tried posting here from my Pre, but couldn't...some kind of error.
Just me or does this blog not work properly on the WebOS???

everyone complains about the ringers... why? they are just mp3's. I got my Pre on Saturday, by Sunday night, I was making my own ringers. just took any mp3 I had and modify (shorten them to a chorus or something) them with Quicktime. saved it as it's own movie(yes, you read that right) and then change the file type to "mp3" and put it in your ringers. took about 2-3 minutes per ringer. VERY easy...

I love my phone. I have one major issue that might be the death of it though and a few minor issues I will live with.
1. There is no support for EAS (ActiveSync) without SSL. My Treo works along with every other phone on the market with EAS. Please fix it or come and force my IT guy to enable SSL.
2. Calendar notification doesn’t allow me to change the sound from the little "beep" that I have. I can easily miss appointments with the quiet "beep". If you allowed a change in the sound for calendar that would rock.
3 spell check.
4. I miss the stronger "cut and paste" in the Treo.
5. a list view for the applications. For now it is easier to use universal search. A list view and a way to arrange my apps would be nice.
Every issue I can live with but the EAS one will cause me to return the phone. I have 26 days to return the phone or get EAS to work. PAAALLLMMMM (i loved the masked man YouTube videos)
10th in line 1st to leave the store with a working Palm Pre (in Torrance, CA)

I'm such a pre groupie lol!! I was in line for mine on the 6th, but I'm sure I'm the only one that forgot the wallet at home. I know, I suck lol!! Palm needs to get the hurry up and supply the existing demand before it goes bye bye.
Also, Right now, I have a motorola q9c and I use it to stream talk radio to my bluetooth headphones so I don't go insane at work. It may seem little to you, but I need to know if 1) you can sream audio from websites such as talkstreamlive.com or the .mobi version, and I would like to know if the range/connection quality for stereo bluetooth headphones is good. I need to be able to be around 25 feet away from my phone with a steady connection. If any of you lucky owners can give me some feedback on this I'd be very pleased.

"Ok...how about Music Player displaying the Album Cover Art?"
The Music Player does display Album Cover Art. For some reason some of mine are showing while others are not. I think that some of the MP3's are just not properly tagged.
"I just upgraded from the Palm Centro to the Pre and I was lead to believe that I could use Msn/Yahoo messenger on this device. I'm really dissappointed by this since I use them a lot. The literature included with my pre even shows the OZ IM app in one of the pictures. Any idea when these will be available???"
It looks like it is most definitely coming. Check the following article out:

BTW, In my recurring tasks example, I mixed up the words June & July some places there but I am sure you got the idea. I look forward to hearing back from you.

Can Palm make the app store viewable online? I'm not a Pre owner yet and would like to track the number of apps being added to the store on a regular basis.
I'd like to make sure the apps I want are there before I buy the phone. Rather than going into a Sprint store, I'd just like to view it online. You could just list the name of the app and a brief description.

I bought Pre on Saturday. I have been using PalmOS since 1996 to manage my contacts.
Where in your priorities is enhancing functionality of following basic features (none of them is difficult):
1. PIM: Frankly speaking PIM functionality is below par. It doesn't yet provide minimum required functionality. Can you at least make it as usable as on PalmOS? After all PIM is what made Palm. You guys are forgetting your roots. Ideally I would like to be able to tag my contacts, tasks and memos (e.g. personal, business, etc). I would like to search based on Tags. Password protected masking of contacts/memos was one of the best ideas! Are you waiting for third party to develop these all?
2. Messaging apps: E.g. no SMS forwarding? Come on guys. It is such a basic functionality. I am hoping in next six months messaging will improve by leaps and bounds. Message alert management?
3. Contact Management: It is great to be able to merge contacts coming from various sources. But how about giving us filters to be able to manage which contacts to keep and which to discard. Rather than going one by one. When the Sprint store only partially ported my old phone book from PalmOS, it was pain to get rid of partial contacts. I couldn't find a way to "delete all" contacts in Pre's phone book. Yes I could go to Device settings and delete application data, only for Pre to synch it back from the cloud after the reboot. Filters, tagging of contacts etc is badly needed for an user to efficiently manage phone book, especially when we keep migrate contacts from emails, old phones, etc. This should have been must have on day one.

you cant scroll through the calender and see upcoming events/appointments - you have to click a specific day to see if you have anything scheduled - this is not very helpful -for such a wow phone it sure seems to be missing some basic capabilities weve come to expect in a phone ( call quality is not all that hot either )

Spell check sure would be nice. I don't think that's asking for too much. Seriously Palm.

Because of my plan, I am not able to purchase my Pre until 28th June if there is one available at that date.
In the mean time, I have been reading every blog I can for early users comments. From the early feedback, it sounds like a very nice phone, but it seems Palm forgot some of the basics.
Reviews say the reception isn't as good as it should be. I noticed my sanyo showed four bars in the store, while the Store Pre only had 2.
Remember first and for most. This is a PHONE. You need to have a good phone, with good battery life. Second it is a PDA. You need to make sure it does what the old Palm Pilot did. The only reason I'm thinking about this is because it's a Palm.
Palm you need to remember what made you great. Your PIM is what made you great. Don't screw the PIM up. You had two things going for you. One you are not Windows, and two your PIM.
There is a lesson that Commadore should have taught all computer businesses. Good Hardware and OS do not sell computers. Good Applications do.
Let's see how many of these PIM basics you can fix between now and the 28th.

I have link my Pre up with my exchange account and it works just fine! But I am missing the fact that there is no SlingPlayer yet. Anyone know when this is coming?????
Posted by: Ryan | June 11, 2009 at 08:00 AM
Hey,
I'm missing a possibility to see the programs in the store without a Palm Pre. A simple web interface would be enough - don't wanna buy just being informed - as long as I can't have my own Pre here in Europa.

I am planning to move from iphone to palm pre when my contract ends with att this sep.
I want to own a palm pre and a palm os netbook that can talk to each other.
The netbook should boot to the palm os browser.

I am really bummed that they have done away with the old calendar. I'm happy that at least we get the availability of it with the Classic app but they should have made it a part of the phone for those of us who do not use an exchange calendar or the google one. It was so easy to customize the classis calendar...also the ability to make some of my memos private. I never thought how vital to me that was. Now anyone who happens to look at my phone can just look through all the memos that I have and that was not something I had to worry about before. You certainly added many cool features but I feel like what I loved the most about my Palm phone has been taken away from me:(

Can anyone tell me when the Palm Pre will be realeased in Australia. Hanging out.

I grabbed "Classic," but haven't figured out how to get classic apps onto the Pre. Can you help? I'm going through withdrawal without my backgammon. ;-)
Posted by: Shel Holtz | June 12, 2009 at 08:43 AM
Hi Shel -- Classic is available from the App Catalog application on your Pre. To get it, simply launch the App Catalog and type "Classic" in the search field.
For more on Classic, below is the link to the MotionApps FAQ.

Is anybody else having problems with their battery life. Either I got a bad battery or this is a major problem for the pre. I'll have a full charge in the morning and be dead by early afternoon with very little activity during work hours mainly during my breaks.

Hello,
The Pre is amazing. However, can you add the following features (in order of priority)?
1. Ability to search email on the Pre
2. Voice dialing
