Today, several webOS developers are formally unveiling new apps and functionality for Palm Pre1. If you’re one of the first customers for Palm Pre, you’ve probably already discovered some of these in the beta version of the App Catalog -- over 150,000 apps were downloaded on the first day that Pre was available.
The webOS developers announcing apps and developer services today include:
-
uLocate: the WHERE application for Pre provides local content based on your current location, including weather, news, restaurant reviews, gas stations, movie show times, and the ability to connect with other users.
- Zumobi: the company’s Today Show and Sporting News Baseball apps for Pre offer on-the-go news and sports updates.
- LikeMe: This application combines your location with your LikeMe profile to offer personalized recommendations on nearby places.
- FlightView: The FlightView app provides users up-to-the-minute flight information.
- Mark/Space: The Mac version of "The Missing Sync for Palm Pre” Beta 1 synchronizes contacts, calendars, music, ringtones, photos and more between a Mac and Pre.
- Chapura: PocketMirror Standard lets Pre users synchronize data with non-EAS desktop versions of Microsoft Outlook.
- Citysearch: With Mobile by Citysearch, Pre users can browse, search and share local business information and post real-time reviews.
- Handmark: Express Stocks helps Palm Pre customers keep up with their stock portfolio and market news.
- Pandora: The popular internet radio application provides a personalized free mobile music channel to Pre customers.
- Fandango: Not only can Pre users view movie trailers and order tickets using this app, but Fandango will automatically schedule your upcoming movies on your calendar thanks to Palm Synergy.
- Beeweeb: beeweeb is offering development services for the Palm webOS platform and the new Palm Pre phone.
- Agile Commerce: Agile Commerce is working with developers to create applications for the Palm webOS platform and the Palm Pre phone.
Hundreds of independent developers are participating in Palm’s early access program for the Mojo SDK (the software development kit for creating webOS apps), with thousands more developers ready to dive in as we ramp up. And with MotionApps’s emulator called “Classic,” Pre already runs programs from the vast library of apps already developed for Palm OS.

(1) Use of this device requires providing a valid e-mail address, mobile phone number, and related information for account setup and activation. Unlimited usage data plan strongly recommended; additional data charges may apply. Within wireless coverage area only. Number of applications and actual performance will vary depending on applications used and actions performed.
What makes the Palm Pre so great is you don't need a program- you can use the power of Cloud Computing. This is the idea that a program exists on the web and not dedicated to a particular device. The advantages are that it allows you to access the same program from any computer, no software is required for purchase, and nothing needs to be installed.
I have been an independent Palm OS programmer for almost 10 years now and am NOT developing for the Pre because I can use Cloud Computing and still produce a good program.

I tell you what would be nice. A bloody alarm clock? Why is this not on the phone as standard?
Posted by: David Pexton | June 08, 2009 at 08:45 AM
The WHERE application is broken for me. It hangs at "Finding Address" and does not go any further.
On a much more related note, I'm glad to see some extremely useful applications available from the beginning. But I would release the Mojo SDK ASAP so developers (such as myself) can get developing for the platform!
We need more applications available! :)

So when can regular people get into the SDK?

How does the new OS handle the notes we have, both as attachments to contacts and notes by themsleves?

What happened to the Desktop sync app? The ability to sync is what founded this market. This has to be available without involving the Internet.

@David Pexton: as of 1.0.2, the Clock app is in there, and supports multiple alarms, including "Weekday", though it has several small bugs.
I recommend people with bug or feech reports use the forums.palm.com forums, there are staffers trolling there who can triage to Palm's internal bugtracker.
Several helpful people also hang out on irc.freenode.net/#palmhelp

I was shocked too when I couldn't find the alarm clock on my new Pre. I searched the help, which mentioned the clock but did not see a clock on the apps pages. Suddenly, a clock appeared later on the main default page that pops up on the launcher. I know it wasn't there before. I did do a Pre WebOS update when prompted and I think that must have included the clock. I love the new handheld so far. I have used Palm since the old fliptop treo days.

uh, there IS an alarm clock.
Upgrade to the 1.2 software version, which it should have automagically done for you last night unless you forgot to plug it in.
anyway, go to update and update.

So far I'm happy with my purchase, but would love more Apps :-). Are there any plans to include SplashMoney and Audible Apps?... I used these a lot on my Palm Centro

Please provide a soft keyboard for the pre. Sliding the keyboard for everything is really not convenient. Also, it would be a great advantage over other smart phones with both these options.
If you already have one available, would you please provide us with the details of how to get the update?
Thanks.

alarm clock is in the clock app

An alarm clock is included as part of the Pre. It is an application that is titled, "Alarms". You can set alarms to run once, every day, every weekday, or every weekend. Try it out. It is very nice as you can make multiple schedules.
BUT WHAT ABOUT....
REPEATING TASKS?
There is no way to create a task and then specify a schedule on which it should repeat. For example, I have to take do timesheets once every two weeks and a productivity report once per month, and a results report once every four months. In my Centro I could create a task for each in which once I checked the task as completed, it would automatically create a new repeat of the task according to the schedule I specified. So in these cases, finishing a timesheet task creates a new one with a due date of two weeks from the completed one, completing a productivity report would create a new one exactly one month from the current due date, and the results report would do the same every four months.
I also use this feature to manage taking medical injections and paying bills. I obviously can't afford to miss those either.
Many of us would greatly appreciate it if someone at Palm could please respond to this post because this is a critical feature for both our professional and consumer lives. The rest of the phone is G-R-E-A-T but without this feature, many of us might have to go back to our previous devices since missing repeating tasks could make us an easy person to single out as a downsizing target if we miss deadlines.
This feature has been a staple of Palm's ToDo list since the beginning. I would not think that it would take too much to provide an update to impliment it in the Pre. We can find work arounds for it in the mean time, but knowing that you guys are listening to this feedback and going to act on would be sincerely appreciated.
Thank you very much for your attention in this matter,
Bob Caruso

The Pre has an alarm clock, you just need to update the firmware.

I love the phone so far, but what is the deal with not being able to change ring tones for SMS, MMS and email etc... They all have that little 'ding' sound and can't be changed. Will there be a fix for that? Other than that, I love it!!

I had the Samsung Instinct before i got my Pre and i am missing a few things already such as: Visual Voice Mail, Forwarding a text message, a Video Recorder, Voice Dailing and lastly the Facebook app looks way better on the Pre but doesn't seem to do as much like showing comments or even letting me post a comment and only shows about 3 posts without being able to "see more" please let me know if these things are there and i am not seeing them, if there coming soon or if my Pre is not gonna do them. Also the backup battery and charger pod were cool, any chance we'll get one?
Posted by: Eric | June 08, 2009 at 04:55 PM
I have not had to pleasure to get a Pre as of yet because no one has any. Is it true that you can't forward text messages ?

I am really impressed with the phone. The battery is performing very well after i disabled the location services. I am looking forward for 2 things:
1-Release of the Mojo SDK to see more apps.
2-Having more apps work in the landscape mode, especially pdf view and doc view.

I'd like someone to tell me if SlingPlayer for Palm OS works on the "Classic" emulator. Because I'm pretty sure SlingPlayer for the Pre isn't going to be out for a while, and that's the main thing that's preventing me from swapping out my Treo 755p for a Pre.

Let me know when there's an app that can actually sync my exchange account since the built in WebOS one is not doing the job. Thanks!
Posted by: Paul | June 08, 2009 at 06:34 PM
You can have repeating events and alarms set in the Calendar app just like the old OS. No repeat, daily, weekdays, weekends, and custom.

The pre is beautiful and my thumbs are look like they are on steroids they have been worked out so much since 6/6/09. in the apps store I would love to know which apps are free and how much the others are, but other than that, my computer will be jealous cause there a new toy in the house.
