Stroud Water Research Center scientists are using Palm TX devices to collect data on fish in the White Clay Creek (including the type of fish, weight, and length). The White Clay, a Wild & Scenic waterway and an Exceptional Value stream in Pennsylvania (a designation which affords it certain legal protections) is an ideal living laboratory for the study of freshwater ecosystems, and enables us to collect data that will ultimately be used to better understand how to protect, preserve and restore our freshwater sources - both here and around the world.

Our Palm devices will also be used in a similar study on the Rio Sierpe on the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica to study the overall health of the Rio Sierpe ecosystem, establish a baseline of data from which to determine change over time, and to evaluate the impact of various land use practices (agriculture/palm oil, banana and rice plantations, shrimp farming and urban development) on the river itself.

Scientists in the Center’s fish molecular ecology lab love the ease of use, electronic data capture, and the ability to do quick calculations in the field. Soon they’ll be taking advantage of the Palm TX device’s wireless capabilities to transmit data on the movement, growth and survival of eels.
