Ed's recapping:
Here's what we've shown: the new webOS, an amazing new device, partners -- like Google, Yahoo, Amazon, AOL, Fandango. One partner -- Pandora -- told us it took them only 3 days to bring their application up on webOS, compared with months on other platforms. All of our appllications are done with HTML, javascript, and basic Web tools -- that's all it takes to create amazing apps. Kudos to the entire Palm team.
Jon R: ...and we're just getting started.
Ed: This platform is going to be the basis for more innovation for the next 10 years.
RP: Here's my recap: It's an incredibly intuitive multitasking multitouch device, running Web apps, and seamlessly integrating data from everywhere. Fast!
JZ: Thanks, Rizwan -- looking forward to seeing all the comments.

Great coverage Jon thanks for sharing. We at Mobility Today are extremely exciting about the new platform. Palm has always been a leader and at times of doubt those who are leaders always step up to the plate. Palm has clearly done this with Pre! We cant wait to get our hands on it!
Thanks for sharing

Hi there!
I'm buying one! I was never completely comfortable with the iPhone. But you'd better get that device over to Europe, Sweden faster than december 2009 or I've moved to greener pastures. I'm extremely dependent on the iPhone Things Touch GTD-program and I'll walk with it and the iPhone untill there's something similar for the Pre.

I hope this presentation was recorded and will be put on Palm.com
I hope you copy Apple and post a 10 minute or so video of a Palm employee running through the entire operating system and new device.
I hope you make a version of this device for the rest of the world that runs on GSM/EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA networks.
I hope you have a centralized "app store" like environment for developers to sell their applications.
I hope that you come out with a travel charger, and include it in the box, for those of us who are on the road a lot. Carrying around something called a "touchstone" doesn't sound so pleasant.
I hope the desktop portion of this device is equally as impressive as the mobile side. By that I mean I hope the Palm Desktop Software is updated and polished, better yet I hope it simply runs in the cloud.
I hope you allow developers to extend the device beyond simple HTML, CS and JS application. Something like a podcast downloader, bit torrent downloader, XviD player, etc., should be able to be built onto this device.
I hope for a lot of things, but most importantly I hope to see Palm come back and kick ass again.
Please deliver.

I was extremely excited until I read that there will not be a GSM version. Please comment and clarify. Please understand and realize, palm will not make it if it's US only. You need the rest of the world. Don't fall into the same pit again! Think global!

To all of our international fans: We have not forgotten about you! Yes, a world-ready (UMTS) version of the Pre will be available in other regions worldwide--we will have more info to share as we get closer to availability. Stay tuned!

Where was the demo of YOUTUBE? After Hawkins was scorned for the Foleo being a weakling and unable to do YouTube, you'd think you guys would have a BIG RED LINE on your Demo Checklist that said DEMO YOUTUBE!

Hi Mike, the Pre provides a great multimedia experience including streaming video and supports the following formats: MPEG-4, H.263, H.264. YouTube does broadcast in H.264, so rest assured that the Pre can provide you access to YouTube videos.

I hate Palms. I always lose that stupid pen thingy
Posted by: VA Loans | January 08, 2009 at 09:24 PM
Hey, VA Loans -- you'll be happy to know the Palm Pre gesture-based interface (with slider keyboard) doesn't need a "pen thingy."

Congratulations, Palm - this looks like a great device and it's absolutely beautiful!!

I have to say that the more info I gain about the Pre, the more interesting it becomes! You've done a really impressive job, Palm!
I have a few questions I haven't found answers to though:
Q1: The touchstone - I understand the phone is held in place by magnets. Are the magnets placed in the touchstone only or also in the phone? My question relates to the fact that magnets in the phone will mess up the compass readings in my boat which can in worst case have fatal concequences.
Q2: The qwerty-keyboard is optimized for english. However, there's a 'sym' key that could have user customizable functionalities (eg. utilizing short press/extended press etc) that could compensate for some additional letters most other languages have. Do you have any innovative plans for that? (eg. scandinavian countries would need 3 additional letters, å, ä, ö). It might not feel important for you but imagine a kbd without, say, c, q and z. Something to consider in the gsm version?

Hey, Anonymous Finn, thanks for the compliment and the insightful questions. More details around the Palm Pre's keyboard and Touchstone charging dock to come soon. Stay tuned and thank for reading.

Why is it that all the cool new stuff gets announced in Vegas? Not that I am complaining as I love las Vegas.
