Is the Sprint Treo 800w "the best Treo ever"? Or perhaps it's "the most productive Windows Mobile Pro device"? We'll take either compliment, thank you.
Reviewers have noted how "Palm's...'special sauce'" simplifies navigation and operation for the individual user, while also incorporating crucial features for effective enterprise deployment. All of which adds up to a device that's "made for business...a great, great, great phone."
Here's a sample of the early raves for the Sprint Treo 800w:
"From my perspective, especially as a Windows Mobile fan, this is the best Treo ever." MobileBurn.com
"The Treo 800w is the most productive Windows Mobile Pro device I've ever used." WMExperts
"Palm has also added their own 'special sauce' to Windows Mobile to improve end user functionality and let you navigate the device with a single hand." ZDNet
"Palm's Wi-Fi hardware and software innovations make it easy to get online fast and manage network connections and power usage." Treonauts
"Along with all the usual Windows Mobile features, Palm's Windows Mobile Treos are most notable for their highly customized home screens, which build in a Google search bar, speed dialing and photo speed dial." PC Magazine
"There's a brand new smartphone on the market that's sleek, slim, super fast and loaded with 21st century smartphone features...It's a newly designed handset from Palm -- and it's a winner." TheStreet.com

What? No Vista 64 support STILL after 2 years? The old Treo's had an excuse, Vista was new when they came out. This one doesn't, Vista is 2 years old. We are moving from our 29 Treo's to iPhones due to the fact our entire company is Vista 64 based.

Congrats Palm! Keep up the good work!

I don't know if the new Treo is the best ever; I know that my Treo 755P locks up and seems to have a life of it's own.

All I can hear is iPhone 3G all 'till the cows come home. Nice launch date, folks. :-]

Hopefully this new Treo will bring Palm back to profitability.
It seems Palm is on a roll now. The designs are quite conservative, but the quality is there. I'm personally not interested in Windows Mobile, but I'm hoping for the best with this new device. The blue doesn't look too professional by the way...
Now where is my TX with cell radio? And NOVA? And make sure it can be used in many languages, and have international radios. I'm counting on you Palm! In the meantime my TX should keep me handy.

The Treo 800 looks to me the best WORLD phone EVER. It has ALL the frquencies used in every corner of the world plus all the features we expect from Palm.
Only hang-up is the windows environment.
How about installing YOUR own Palm software which I think is the best.
True, it needs to be improved but my suggestions for improvement are minor.
Please work on this idea for people like me.

Congrats. the reviews looks great. I hope you will launch the GSM model for Asian Market soon. Can't wait to replace my treo to the new one. Another thing, i've used PalmOS all this time. will you launch another palmOS treo or this will be the standard platform before nova? tx.

Unfortunately, Palm's CEOs have been publicly quoted saying they believe non-smartphone PDAs are a way of the past. I would agree with this, but currently I'm still waiting for a PalmOS/Nova device that can actually be an upgrade compared to my Palm TX/MotoKRZR combo.
C'mon Palm, where's the huge screens, slide out keyboards, or even PalmOS running flip phones?

Congrats Palm, you now have caught up with the rest of the market as of 2 years ago - minus EVDO Rev A of course. At least its a step in the right direction. Now, what about those of us abandoned PalmOS customers (particularly the one's plagued with the unstable 700p's) who are waiting for even some details (even screenshots) of the NovaOS? I sure hope Nova is everything it's cracked up to be or, after my experience with the 700p, I'm going to jump on the iPhone Bandwagon!

Very good! Do you know when Verizon will start selling the Treo 800w?
Posted by: vic | July 16, 2008 at 01:43 PM
Suprised no one has mentioned this yet.
From:
http://www.palm.com/us/products/smartphones/treo800w/specs.html
"Built-in GPS (standalone and assisted)"
Yet....stand alone GPS does not work.
Wanna test it?
Turn off your radio. Soft reset your phone (via pulling the battery or software). After your phone boots, launch a third party GPS application (Garmin, TomTom, etc). Note that Maps, Google Maps, and similar programs require a data connection, so they cannot be used to test this.
Anyway, watch your GPS fail to connect.
If your radio is on, then GPS works. If it's off, then it doesn't.
That's not stand alone GPS, folks. Assisted GPS is great, but I need GPS the most when I *DON'T* have a carriers signal (out in the middle of the woods or what-not).

Well the palm treo 800w might just be the best one out in the market right now, but there are still problems with it.
First off, the speakerphone tends to crackle and pop while it is in use. :(
The earpiece along with the speakerphone tends to be muffled while in use as well. Very sad for a smart device which is used as a phone.
Battery life... I can understand since its such a feature rich device, but couldn't it been just a bit bigger?
Please Palm, fix the first two problems with the phone and that would keep me and countless others happy to be apart of the Palm experience!

well I went out and paid the extra 50 dollars and upgraded to the 800w from 700wx. @ liked it until I found out that the alarm clock does not work. I get no sound and I have gone over the settings several times. even taken the battery out. plus there is only one connection on it. You either listen to music\tv with headphones OR you charge the phone a d use the speakerphone. the screen and OS are cool and the WIFI too. but I wish it came with the sturdy stylus that came with the 700wx model instead of the plastic bendable one that came with it. The stylus was the only thing I didn't like about it but now I have 3 things I don't like. Over all I give this phone 4 stars out of 5. It was the only phone I could find that had everything I wanted in a phone. and to think, I almost went to Blackberry but couldn't because they didn't have any in stock anywhere in N. CA.

I have had the 800W for 5 days now. It's an amazing device and should be quite the work horse.
Microsoft's Live Search application software runs like magic on this device. The speaker independent voice input in this app is amazing and uncanningly accurate and speedy. Combined with the GPS info it's a wonderful tool for everyday use.
The speaker independent voice input in voice command also seems like tomorrow's technology today. It can really speed up typical tasks by zooming in on the right contact, the right song artist, or the right program.
Everything else, runs, well SNAPPY!
Two issues keep this device from getting a perfect 10. One, the battery life cannot keep up with all the new features. While I am pleased at all the connections hardware, nevertheless it's the shortest functional battery life of any of the 4 Treos I have owned. People buy Treos for functionality, not fads, and a little more juice would come in handy.
Secondly, though the built in Live Search app gives on screen directions, it lacks turn by turn voice directions, a safety prerequisite. So it was surprsing to learn that Tom Tom and Garmin software, leaders in the field, cannot recognize the GPS port(s) and thus are non-functional.
I am sure the GPS problem will be resolved soon (right Palm?) and there is always the market for extended batteries even if it takes a little hump (remember functionality is the key). So this device will be my workhorse for the next two years, even though perfection eludes "the best Treo device ever".

Palm,
if you want to make money then work on making a smartphone that actually works right. The Treo's have had way too many problems and the support has been an almost complete failure. Dumped my 700p after months of waiting for fixed that just didn't come or when they came made the phone worse. I check the boards to see if anything has changed but they still have lots of issue. Never getting my money again and I have steered many a buyer away from Palm due to my experience. You have a lot of people that you let down. And your neglect has given us voice to speak up.

Where is the replacement for my old TX. I need a big screen smartphone just like the IPhone. No needs for a physical keyboard. I want a TX with Cell radio!!!
Posted by: roband | July 16, 2008 at 08:36 PM
It had the potential of being the best Treo ever, but when Palm decided to put the Centro battery in the device, a terrible speakerphone, and GPS that is not really standalone as described, it unfortunately fell from this claim. Palm, we need you to step up to the plate on this and fix these issues.

All I have to say is where was the effort to make the speakerphone sound better? Why won't my bluetooth headset work with voice command? These are basic things that I hoped would be much improved from my Treo 700p.

Will the Treo 800 be coming to the AT&T network at some time in the future? Approximate time frame?

Although I have not tested this new device yet and somewhat can't wait for the improved version to hit Verizon Wireless network. It seems that the Palm Treo 800w fell short of its mark. I cannot understand why Palm did not make the screen larger similar to the Blackberry 8703? a larger capacity battery? This looks like a direct imitation of the Centro with additional software. Kudos for the much needed improvements - faster processor and more storage capacity, better resolution on camera, WiFi + GPS although I'm not reading about its faulty application. Apple 3G set the mark and is running away with sales.

Not really, with this battery life, really low volume sound, and cannot play youtube movies? I think we are still waiting for a software update

Is the new treo 800 going to rollout for at&t ? When might I expect that ?

My opinion based on the reviews from several blogs and observations about the description of the Treo 800w. Sadly, as much as I would love to upgrade from my 700wx to the new 800w it's troublesome to read about all the issues related to this new phone. Those of us who are loyal Palm
Treo owners feel that Palm missed the mark. The phone's design should have been
different from the Centro in shape and size. I would have preferred a unit
similar to a Blackberry 8703 with a wider top giving it room for a larger screen
and narrow bottom so that it can be held easier by both large/small hands and
making it easier to use the qwerty secion. As reported by other reviewers on
numerous blogs, the major complaints are:1. the battery is too weak (what were
they thinking about??), 2. the "Built-in GPS (standalone and assisted)" does
not work well, 3. the stylus is too flimsy, 4. the speakerphone crackles, 5. USB
port where you cannot listen to media files and charge the phone at the same
time, 6. No MMS - why have a camera on the phone then??? Hopefully Palm will
correct those defiencies as soon as possible.
