TreoCentral and The New York Times both posted lists of nifty free services that help you do everything from getting free directory service to dictating yourself a note and having a transcribed version instantly sent to your inbox. (And did we mention these are free?)
Here are a few more freebies we like:
- Avvenu: Lets you remotely view, download and share documents.
- MiniTones: Gives you a selection of MP3 files that you can add to your ringtone list in Sounds.
- Mosio: Text questions from your phone and have it answered by real people
- Pinger: Send voice messages on the QT--no ringing, no greetings, no lengthy prompts. It's like email, but with your voice.
- Orb Networks: Stream your own music (or other files) to your mobile phone.
- TellMe: Provides voice-activated information service.

I like tryda, a free program that answers the question where is the nearest ....., then supplies you with the address, hooks to Google maps, or provides you with directions. Very fast and one hand operation is possible.

Those are great! I wish that Orb & Avvenu supported Macs, too. Always the *airquote* bridesmaid, never the *airquote* bride. :)

When will a smart phone be designed with a Contacts function that can "search" by "Company" Name; not "sort", but "search" by Company Name?

There's a neat automated reminder service at www.OnCellRx.com They offer a free trial that can be used to send phone or email or text medication reminders to any phone, and it is great for aging parents or almost invincible teenagers who need to take meds. Mom can set up the reminder once and it is delivered every day like clockwork. The Free 30-min trial is plenty of time to test the phone system thoroughly. You can also store your health info online and print it out.
