South by Southwest and the One-Millionth Centro

Updated:

Just over a week ago, I joined the hordes of people descending upon Austin, TX to catch, or be the latest music discovery. It didn’t take too long to learn that SXSW is a tidy little field study for what makes the Palm Centro so popular for today’s mobile lifestyle–in fact the Centro is such a hit that today we announced we’ve sold one million of them.

Palm helped host a music showcase at SXSW with 11 nationally touring artists, who shared what it’s like to try to stay in touch with their family, friends and fans while they’re on the road.

It’s not a very glamorous life. Many up-and-coming musicians spend much of their time on long road trips in cars or motor homes and often go for days or weeks without sitting at a computer, yet they are under constant pressure to keep their fans up to date on their whereabouts and get people to every gig. More and more musicians are using smartphones to connect with fans and everyone else during their hectic touring schedules, including several who are using their Palm Centro to text, email, upload videos and photos, moblog and, oh yeah, talk on the phone.

I’ve posted a video of Alexa Wilkinson talking about her experiences on the road. Women have become one of the breakthrough markets for the Centro because of the combination of its touchscreen and keyboard, as well as the small size and color choices.

Centro is available today from AT&T in glacier white and obsidian black, and from Sprint in onyx black, ruby red and pink.

There is no doubt that the Palm Centro smartphone is a success. True, it is hampered by a decade-old operating system. However, the combination of a good form factor, plus a very low price (US$100, or in some cases even free), has allowed Palm and i... [Read More]

So what software are they using for moblogging? I tried doing that from my 700p but I couldn't find anything that didn't reboot my phone on a regular basis and could post a photo reliably. u*blog hasn't been updated since 2005 and hblogger required an FTP server to post pictures.

Be more palm centre in other colors for AT&T. I am waiting to buy other colors
