Last chance to download JVM for PalmOS
For the past few years, Palm has provided a download of the IBM WebSphere Micro Environment Java
Virtual Machine (JVM) to our customers, which allowed users to install and run Java applications and games on their devices.
As of Jan. 12, 2008, we will no longer be providing this as a downloadable application from our website. We will continue to support JVM on our website, but will not be able to offer version upgrades or software downloads.
Tim P. - Product Manager
UPDATED:
There were many comments regarding the rationale for no longer providing the JVM, and we appreciate your comments on the JVM availability. The reason that this is being not being offered after the 12th, is that Palm no longer has rights to distribute the JVM for Palm OS. We will continue to support users who have downloaded the JVM, but cannot continue to distribute it.

Okay guys...chill out a little bit. This is not that they don't want to, they are unable to based on past distribution agreements with IBM.
That being said, I am wondering if with the open sourcing of the ME (and JDK), if this energy would be better spent helping with a port or update to Palm support.
Although that still raises the question if the Palm OS (5.x) days are numbered to be replaced by new OS (with it be Accesses or Palms), how much effort should one put into it.

The only way for Palm win the market, over others devices o smarthphones, is supporting j2me, and developing APS's for more funtionality. like blackberry JDE.
Many developers let down the develop for palm OS.

I have a tx and it is really very bad news for the entire community of users and developers (I am both). In my work I know 4 user who also have a TX and they feel the same way.

OK, if you can't distribute it, I presume IBM can -- can you at least point us to a link where we CAN still get it?

John Beatty:
You offered to share your copy of the JVM with others. May I have?

Palm has lost it. They no longer draw the crowds. The only remaining are the loyalists. Its on to better devices I guess

"Palm will continue to support the JVM on our website"
What a joke !
There has been no support whatsoever for Java on Palm for years, I have always wondered if anyone from Palm has ever read the Java dev forum.
Well, I guess that's it.

REGARDING:
Posted by: John Beatty | January 11, 2008 at 11:19 AM
I too want to know why. I guess I'll take solace in the fact that I have it and would give it to anyone who asked. I bet there are other places to get it, too.
IS YOUR OFFER TO SHARE STILL AVAILABLE? OR IS ANYONE ELSE WILLING TO SHARE?
I'VE USED THE PALM OS FOR A FEW YEARS, BUT NOW NEED THE JVM & CAN'T GET IT. I REALLY DON'T WANT TO GET A BLACKBERRY OR OTHER SMARTPHONE W/JVM PREINSTALLED, BUT PALM HASN'T GIVEN ANY OTHER ALTERNATIVES.

palm come on. the first thing is that you would think that a device packed with so much features would atleast have more wall papers, theams, camera settings etc to make the handset more exciting, and add on software. also we as customers have payed so much for the handset can we get some cool free softare. all other brands are doing it. now u stop supporting JVM. i have a treo 680 its a great device but my favorite apps cant work on it since it no longer supports java. come on guys u really are giving the end users no other choice but to give up palm. we supprt u cant u just do this for us and keep supporting the java line. come on palm come on.

I need Java so I can run Opera Mini on my new Centro, argh! I've been a Palm user going back three models now, and it seems like they're doing everything in their power to drive me away. If it weren't for the amount I've already invested in software, I'd be gone already. Can someone please email Jave to me? comptechmike at gmail dot com. Thank you - thank you - thank you!

I just purchased a Tungsten C, and finally today learned of the existence of Opera Mini, the fix to one of my few complaints of the Palm -- its web browser. Now I've learned I can't get it because of this. Grrr!

This is kind of sad. I consider(ed) buying a Centro, because it's really a nice device, but the lack of a JVM is a no-go. Is there a chance to still get the JVM legally from either IBM or Access?

I think it's ridiculous and Palm still should be able to distribute it. Does anyone know of anywhere else I can a virtual machine for my palm please???

Common, do not be so pessimistic! This step approaches palm devices to tho worlds most perferct phone: Apple iPhone, which has no java too...

To a few of the commenters above with "sky is falling" attitudes: the decision probably has to do with money and IBM´s ongoing licensing fees for the VM.
I don´t know if you have read about it but Java is now OPEN SOURCE, even the Java "ME" (mobile edition).
End users can find the latest Java VM for Palm devices (5.7.2) on some sites by googling for "treo jvm.zip" or "treo ibm java download".
Going forward, the best option nowadays would be for interested people to follow Sun´s call and help port Java ME -now open source- to the Palm OS.
