The unlocked GSM Treo 680 software update will be available soon. Palm is offering a service that will send registered users an email informing them when the update is available. To register, go to http://palm.com/680update and sign up.
Thanks,
Greg Agustin - Product Manager
Well i certainly hope the unlocked GSM version's update also has PTT and Instant Messaging! I look forward to this update and hope it fixes the "lag", occasionaly freezing with incoming calls and poor battery life which users complain about.

Palm make sure you fix the receival of alfanumeric SMS before releasing the update for the Unlocked Treo 680 update (the Singapore SMS update works but we Europeans also need this functionality).

I can't believe it. I and a lot of german treo users thougt, that Palm has forgotten all the treo users.
Almost a year ago, palm support members said, that there will a update concerning the powersaving problems and so on.
But unfortunately I sold my copper Treo two weeks ago. And so did a lot of treo users. Maybe it's to late....
Best regards
Karl

"The unlocked GSM Treo 680 software update will be available soon."
That's the same line you gave months ago when you released the first AT&T update package.
We unlocked Treo 680 users never did get an update as promised.
I have an idea, why don't you actually give a date rather than wasting our time. You could say for instance, "the unlocked update will be released in January 2008", rather than your standard "soon" which usually means never.

This is a nice step in the right direction, you give clear instructions, and even (up to date :D not years old) info for installing using Mac OS X as desktop (now .... if you Could update that little thing called "Palm Desktop" ... thanks).
Go on Palm, and make this to Unlocked GSM users (yea, we WANT the IM application too), and in a variety of languages.

Is there any chance of the enhanced ringtone support, included in this release for the Treo 680, coming to the Centro? Thank you.

Tried 3 different SD cards, mutliple downloads, and get nothing when I insert the SD card into the Treo. No update, no nothing.

I can't find any information about this update other than what's posted here. Where can I find out how to use the mp3 ringtone options? Does the IM use SMS messages? What power options have been updated? This is some information that would be extremely useful!

Why is it that Palm cannot expose the API's for location based services? We've been wanting this for years now and it seems that Google doesn't even have enough strongarm to do it?

Palm, you are so dead!!

I have tried everything but, every time I attempt to do the update 2.11, my Treo 680 crashes. I get a message that the device connection failed. I keep pressing "try again" and sometimes the copying continues for a few minutes before the Treo crashes again. Don't know how to get the update. HELP.

I agree wth Rick. I have a bunch of stuff I have no idea how to use. How does Push-to-Talk work? How do I assign an MP3 ringtone? It's nice to have these things, but it would be a lot nicer to know how they work.
Also, my 8GB SDHC card has worked since they came out. Why include this info in the notes, and say that 'up to 4GB cards are supported" when it will accept 8GB with no problem?

I, like others here, cannot get past the "copying files" piece. Tried a half dozen times, and the treo seems to hang up on this copying command. Takes a reset on mine to get out of it. HELP!!!

This is a nice step in the right direction for Palm, give Jon Rubinstein a little time, and I think he will do the best to give us a WiFi and GPS Palm gadget :D.

After three attempts I finally got the updater to take. I had to do a hard reset (sync to backup before) and it went as describe (although the instruction for a hard reset are not correct on the update palm site). I still haven't figured out how to assign an mp3 as a ringtone, though. Would be nice if it were described in more detail from Palm.

What about bluetooth? Were their any updates with that?
I have problems linking with my vehicle's factory bluetooth system and I know it is not the factory system.
Thanks Palm. (Sarcasm implied)

Anyone who wants MP3 ringtones (for any Treo) does not need to rely on Palm update. Just get MiniTones (freeware). That's all you need for that.

I also had problems with the new update. After the installation finishes successfully, the treo "reboots" one last time. The treo would freeze on the "Palm OS" screen every time. I continuosly had to do a "system warm reset" for it to come up. I do not have anything else installed on the Treo other than the apps that came with it (Pocket Tunes, Bejeweled, Solitaire). I ended up having to do a hard reset and restore everything I had from the backup BEFORE the update. Have not tried the update again since it was a real pain getting everything back.

One week passed, still no Unlocked GSM update. What about us customers who paid the full price for this device? How long do we still have to wait? Palm at least give us a date.

Updater installed just fine- however there is now a quite annoying lag when looking up contacts between keyboard entry and display entry and of contacts on the screen. Any thoughts?
Also being at least part Luddite, I will probably never use some of the "enhancements" and new capabilities- any way to remove them or are they now permanently installed?

Does the Treo 680 support using blue tooth for mp3 listening using Ptunes? Anyone know this? It works fine for phone calls, but nothing with music listening.

I downloaded the update without immediate problems, however I cannot get a hot sync to finish and get an error message that contacts did not sync. This started about the time the update was loaded. I have gone through the repair process from my Office 2003 CD to repair Outlook, removed and reloaded the Treo 680 CD, tried to sync with Palm Desktop and nothing works. During one of the sync tries with Palm Desktop all my computer calendar info was wiped out and it is now only on my Palm with no way to backup. I need help.

Like so many others, I have tried everything but, every time I attempt to do the update 2.11, my Treo 680 crashes. I get a message that the device connection failed. I keep pressing "try again" and sometimes the copying continues for a few minutes before the Treo crashes again. Don't know how to get the update. HELP. What is the fix?

On behalf of everyone who has posted to this blog entry I would like to state that all of Palm products are now offically Defective By Design ( http://defectivebydesign.org/ ).
If I'm getting a discount on some crappy sudoku game and a couple of programs that I can't use due to my service contract instead of a Java VM, something is not right in Sunnydale.
Stop thinking like market representatives, and start thinking like programmers and the customers you are suppost to serve!
There is still time to make things right. Fix your mistakes, don't discontinue your products.
