Moblogging From Your Treo

I was excited to attend Gnomedex 7.0 in Seattle a couple weeks ago. I figured it would be the perfect opportunity to catch up with a lot of people I had previously only chatted with over email, show off some Treo smartphones and the Palm Foleo, do a little moblogging, etc. I covered off on most of the list, but I didn't get to do any moblogging - people kept coming by the Palm table to ask questions (imagine that). Several people actually came up and asked about moblogging from a Treo, so i figured it would be good to do a little roundup of moblogging solutions that are available on Treo smartphones.

You can download moblogging apps for Typepad and Vox to Treos 650 and higher on both Palm OS and WinMo. Features and functionality include:

-Simple interface that includes blog post title, body, picture/video upload

-Update Categories

-Blogger:

You can moblog text and photos on Palm OS and WinMo Treos by sending a message to go@blogger.com from your phone. If you don’t already have a blogger account, sending the message itself is enough to create a new blog (you just need to go in a claim it).

-WordPress:

You can moblog text on Palm OS and WinMo Treos by setting up “blog-by-email” for your account using your mobile phone’s email application. There are also several add-ons and hacks, including posting to categories, automatic removal of email signatures and POP3/IMAL (+SSL).

You can Twitter (moblog/“mini-blog”) from your Treo by using the Palm threaded chat threaded chat (Palm OS Treo 650 and higher or Treo 750) to send a text message, or by typing a message from the mobile Twitter site. You can also download the latest version of the free application MoTwit to your Palm OS Treo, which has shortcuts (”Open” combobox) that open the more common Twitter pages in your Web browser.

Twitter:

You can use your Palm OS or WinMo Treo to email photos directly to your Flickr account and post to your blog. Use the subject line for a title and the body of the email for a description. Make sure you set up posting to your blog from Flickr if you haven't already. Mark Ghosh provides a great overview of how to do this and more using WordPress.

-Set preferences for network, camera, archiving, uploading

-Vox provides control over who views stories, photos, videos or audio

Both Typepad and Vox also allow you to moblog directly by sending an email from your Treo – check out the support page to configure your moblogging settings.

This would be a really cool feature to use!! Unfortunately, my 700p (VZW) freezes on me all the time and I can't get the firmware update because Palm removed it from the site. So, until my phone actually works, guess I won't be able to use this extremely useful feature.

In addition to the Wordpress section you should add "Postie". It's a great plug-in that allows you to post attached images to your WP blog. See my site, most posts are done with my Treo 700wx via email. I can even set categories from the email!

It would be excellent if there was some good support for Jaiku. As not only a micorblogging application, but a means to really stretch the connectivity of a Palm device to actually making relationships, it would be neat.

I'm feeling nostalgic, I was moblogging on a Palm V hooked up to a GSM cellphone back in 2000. We had to write our own blogging web software then, and I don't think anyone had called it blogging either.

On the Twitter side there is also a really simple program called Twitter2Go that will allow posting of entries into Twitter!

For Twitter, I don't really like TreoTwit because Unicode isn't supported.

I use Chatopus to use MSN & ICQ, but I can also use Chatopus to connect to the Jabber server, which is available for Twitter also.

If you don't want to pay money, try the freeware version of Gizmo, you can also use it as a Jabber client. http://www.gizmoproject.com/learnmore-palm.html

(Chatopus and Gizmo are basically the same product, written by the same Hong Kong guy.)
