Treo 700 Series Software Updates

We have temporarily taken down the Verizon Wireless Treo 700p and 700w/wx updaters as a result of reports from customers who have experienced data network connectivity issues after installing the software updaters on their device.

The issue is caused by a device setting that affects connectivity to the Verizon Wireless network under certain situations and only occurs on devices that have installed the updaters. Users receive an error message and typically can reconnect to the data network after a short period of time. This data connectivity issue does not affect the device or personal data in any other way.

We are currently working on delivering a solution and will repost the updaters as soon as they are available. If you would like to be notified by email when the updaters are available, please submit your email address: Treo 700p - Treo 700w/wx.

Treo 700p and 700w/wx users on Verizon Wireless experiencing the data connectivity issue will see the below error messages more frequently:

  • "Error 3000 - Data network is not available"
  • "Page Cannot Be Displayed"
  • "Answering Modem is Disconnected"

Also, the Sprint Treo 700p desktop updater is no longer available due to additional reports of an installation issue that causes the device to continuously reset when installing the software update. The SD/MMC expansion card updater will continue to be available. You won't need to reinstall the software update if you have already done so successfully.

If you have experienced an issue with installing any of the above software updates, please contact us: Verizon Wireless users 866-770-7256; Sprint users 866-750-7256.

Thank you for your patience and we apologize for any inconvenience.

I just hope it is fixed soon. I am getting really tired of having to do a hard reset on my device. I have been having problems with my Verizon 700P for about 6 months and the release .10 is really causing network problems. I would also be happy if Verizon would exchange for a 755P as well.

the 700p is terrible. They really folioed this thing up.

Your update caused me to choose which one I want my 700P bluetooth to connect with. If I connct to my dodge Uconnect through bluetooth my computer tells me (when I try to Sync that the port is busy. If I remove the my 700P from the computer and re-install it, it will work all the time when I sync but won't connect to my Dodge Uconnect. Something is terribly wrong with this phone and you should do a recall and give us all new phones.

An update for the update. This is amazing. Is Microsoft writing the code?
I installed the update two or three days after it became available because my bluetooth headset (that Verizon said was the best one to match the Treo) kept disconnecting itself and I had to do a soft reset to get it connected again. Palm & Verizon said " not us" which is very typical.
I did the update per the instructions. I followed it to the letter. Afterwards I had all of the same problems that have been mentioned in the previous posts on the blogs.
On Friday this week I pressed the email button to get my email and found a new error and my email was gone. There was a screen to start the email account process. I pulled the battery and it did it's own HARD RESET instead of the soft one that should have happened. I decided to call verizon before I did a hot sync and they lead me through a lot of #*# (not swearing) sequences to "get rid of the 3000 error. They are going to send me a new phone, with the wonderful update already installed I might add. A lot of good that will do.
Even after all of the #*# sequences, I still get the 3000 errors and more.
Palm needs to rethink this mess!

Palm and or Verizon needs to step up and come up with something fast. I use this device for business and the interuptions are very annoying.

Glad you're gonna fix this although I've sorta gotten used to just trying to get my e-mail 3-5 times before it actually connects.

Now, what about the crazy slowness that I get using the calendar all of a sudden? That never happened before the update and now I have to take a beat between each keystroke in order to spell out an entire word or else the device skips over letters. Very annoying!!!

Is anyone else experiencing this? If so, have you found a solution??

In addition to the DTMF sounds coming out when the silence switch is enabled there is another problem that was introduced in the 700p MR as well as the Treo 755p...

If you have a audio cable plugged into the bottom of the phone (such as I use for connecting my Treo to my car stereo for playback of music and audiobooks while driving) this now completely disables the use of a Bluetooth headset for making or receiving phone calls regardless of the Bluetooth or Handsfree settings.

The Treo 650 and the Treo 700p pre-MR would allow you to have an audio cable plugged into the headset port for exactly this reason (as is demonstrated by the various Seidio cradles that support this feature) and you could still use a BT headset for making calls.

This is a showstopper issue for me and I've already exchanged my 700p in an attempt to get a pre-MR 700p. They ended up giving me a post-MR 700p so I'll be heading back to the Sprint store again this coming weekend to work on getting another replacement...unless Sprint will promise to fix this problem (and the DTMF problem) in an upcoming MR.

When people were complaining about how long it took to come out with the update, I was one of the first on here defending Palm. But now I have a buggy phone and both Sprint and Palm have turned their backs on me. The update made my phone 10x worse, and all anyone wants to do is give me a "refurbished 700p". I did not go into the store 6 months ago, sign a 2yr agreement and fork over $400 for a used phone, I'm sorry. I hear all these stories of people getting happy new 755p phones as replacements, I'm finding that hard to believe. I have never experienced more run around, finger pointing, and shrugged shoulders in all my life. Anyways all this has left me very angry and I will not be returning to either companie's product after I limp my phone to the contract's finish line. Thank you for doing business with me and kicking me to the curb, I'll be on my way now.

Dear Palm,

Unfortunately this data issue doesnt only exist with Verizon Wireless users but also Sprint. I wrote a BBB Complaint to you which I was happy to get some dialogue to not talk about my issues but with issues of the others. It greatly disappoints me that the Palm 'Engineers' think this is a issue with verizon only. I appreciate the fact that you finally acknowledged the problem not only to me but to the general public as well as Verizon Wireless. Unfortunately its been many weeks where I've gone through a series of phone relpacements through Verizon and each phone I get has a different problem. (Either totally dead data, reboots, freezes, lags or defective buttons.)

I dont know what we did to so deserve this kind of 'sweep us under the rug' treatment. We liked this product but we were not in the business of buying a phone every other revision to get better revision of hardware and software.

Palm, its time to step up to the plate before consumers rise against you. At the average stock price of $14-16 you can't afford to anger the consumers. While RIM's stock hovers at $200+ on average.

There's a great letter to Palm on Engadget today. I think it fairly represents the views of many of Palm's loyal users. Palm really should respond to the letter. Point by point.

Maybe you guys could also read and take heed of Engadget's great letter to Palm:

http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/21/dear-palm-its-time-for-an-intervention/

It accurately reflects our collective feelings...

Does this fix the freeze up issues? I have to hit re-set at least twice a day. Yesterday a call was coming in, it was ringing, but because it was frozen I could not answer it. I have a 700w from Verizon.

Please inform Palm management of this open letter from Engadget requesting Palm make radical changes to save itself. The letter captures what all Palm users have been clamoring for. The open letter is at...

Dear Palm, I have owned several Palms, starting with the Palm Pilot and culminating with the TX. The TX is probably the best PDA made. I decided to get the 700P and knew I was going to experience some problems. I am now on my 4th 700P since May 07. Lets face it if this was an automobile it would be a huge recall! I do not understand Palm on this one. I guess if Verizon keeps sending out new 700P to replace bad ones Palm will get the message, or go broke. PALM please show us that you provide a quality product with quality support. Suck it up and admit the 700P is a FLOP!

This is an excellent story and I hope Palm takes some of the suggestions...

I hope you are reading this...and see the 143+ comments it inspired. Dead on. I hope something good is in the works. I'm going to ride out my 700p until then.

Hey Palm -

Have any of you seen Engadget's writeup of what you can do to save your devices? I pray that someone in your organization is taking ALL these points on board. No wifi in 2007? Seriously.

I challenge Palm to respond to this: http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/21/dear-palm-its-time-for-an-intervention/

On this blog.

I'm on the TELUS network and were having the same issue with the Answering Modem disconnecting. I'm having to to remove the battery several times a day to get it to reconnect and sync.

slightly off topic, but engadget has a nice letter for you palm, that summarizes probably most of our feelings (being palm users about to jump ship if improvements don't happen).

I am experiencing a powerdown each time I want to connect to the internet to get my emails. I've only had my treo 2 weeks and was working with a tech on it over the weekend. Now my device won't stay up on my account.????Any suggestions? I've done a soft reset, a batter removal (10 seconds) already. Thanks

This is a question for VZW and Palm, can I reload the 1.06 version software now that I have the 1.10?
I saw the 1.06 update on the Palm site; http://www.palm.com/us/support/downloads/rawir700p.html
At least with 1.06 I could connect to broadband 90% of the time. With 1.10 it's about 20%.

I had a Palm Pilot 1, a later Pilot (a 3?), and for years kept contact/date info on one machine and phone on another. I got a relatively early (7620?) Blackberry for GSM coverage, loved it but used it only in Europe travelling. The 700p was supposed to be my unifying device -- drop the separate phones, pick up a throwaway prepay for Europe, and get it all integrated.

What a disaster. Bluetooth support is a mess. Random system crashes and delays. Call Verizon, ask the tech, "tell me honestly, how many of your calls are about Treo problems?" That night, 70%. I DIDN'T download the new release when it came out, because I didn't trust it. Turns out I was right.

Time to go to the CDMA/GSM Blackberry, junk the Treo, and say goodbye to Palm.

And here we are in September...

And the last "official" word from Palm was on Aug. 15th when it was announced [above] that Palm had decided (however belatedly) that their users weren't just blowing smoke "again" when complaining about problems generated by an update.

It should be noted that the Verizon firmware update rollout process was initially tightly controlled in order to forestall what one can only presume was perceived internally as user problems complying with the instructions and therefore, themselves [read: 700p owners], causing any failures to the firmware update process.

This resulted in a nearly global *vendor* controlled update to the Treo 700p line, leaving customers scrambling to obtain one of the precious few remaining pre-update phones as problems were finally recognized by Palm.

To the lucky few to still have Treo 700p phones that lack the installed update: Take cheer in the fact that your phones *only* have the original problems [non-functional bluetooth, poorly staged e-mail and SMS, random freezes and lockups, etc.]

For those with the compounded problems of this update -- which (in addition to the original problems) really should include:

- some still unresolved bluetooth issues,

-the random shifted shadow lettering,

-"ghost" DTMF tones that render the hardware silencer button non-functional thus rendering the entire device unsuitable for an untold number of professional users,

-the loss of THE central part of any "smart" phone -- it's data connections

Here too, note that data connection problems are further compounded for those on the outskirts of Verizon's EVDO coverage -- where "1x" is a familiar icon onscreen and spotty coverage has always been a cross to bear.

Is this singular lack of response, lack of alternate plans, lack of timely updates, etc. to be considered a harbinger of the "new transparency" and "vigorous approaches to challenges" denoted in Mr. Colligan's response to Engaget's adverse coverage?

Or, perhaps, the two issues are completely unrelated since the Palm Blog isn't regularly read by investors and other media sources?

Either way, the bifurcation is disturbing.
-John Carter

The update caused different problems for my Treo 700p. I'm not getting any strange noises or connectivity problems. Instead, I lost several 3rd party programs, all of my voice memos, my call history and text history, all of my quick contacts, and all of my memos, among other things. The memos are still in the Palm Desktop, but they have disappeared from the Treo, and they will not sync back up, even though the Hotsync setting says that it should. I called Sprint to complain about this, and they just played dumb. That was about 3 weeks ago, and I haven't heard anything from them since.
